Unit 1: Why numbers matter

1.4 How this course works

4 minutes

The course has six units. Four look at a problem that people in the effective altruism community often prioritise. Each problem comes with an idea that makes people take it seriously, and an honest account of where the case is weakest. The last unit is about choosing between problems and what you might do next.

A few practical points:

  • Lessons take 2–6 minutes. The whole course takes about two hours, in one sitting or several.
  • Your progress and answers are saved in this browser. There is no account, and EAN can't see what you write.
  • "Bonus" sections are optional extra reading. They aren't counted in the two hours.
  • Every number has a source and a date. If you think one is wrong, use the feedback link at the bottom of the page.

This is a tour, not a ranking you have to accept. People who have thought hard about these problems disagree, and we try to show where and why.
