Why this is on the board
For many hazards that AI makes possible, such as synthetic microbes or new ways of spreading pathogens, there is as yet no field of study and no historical precedent to lean on. Whoever sets down the first methods and priorities here decides what researchers, funders and policymakers look at in the coming years and which protective technology gets funded first, though no one knows in advance which threats will actually materialise.

About the role
Shape a research portfolio addressing novel AI-enabled civilisational hazards through detection sciences, resilience technologies, and scientific coordination. - Conduct horizon-scanning for AI-enabled hazard classes and develop methodologies for reasoning about threats lacking historical precedent or established scientific communities. - Investigate next-generation detection sciences such as dynamic pathogen surveillance and analogous approaches for emerging hazard modalities. - Pursue feasi…
