Why this is on the board
AI safety, the study of how to make powerful AI systems reliably do what people intend, is a young field with few mathematicians. A single researcher who makes the switch can therefore noticeably influence its direction. This fellowship gives you three funded months with a mentor to work out whether and where your mathematics fits in. Your work in those months is mostly learning; what it yields only becomes clear in the years after.
About the role
A three-month full-time mentored research fellowship for mathematicians pursuing applied mathematics research in AI alignment. - Conduct independent research in applied mathematics for AI alignment under close mentorship from established researchers. - Requires PhD-level mathematical background or equivalent research experience in mathematics or related fields. - Three-month full-time in-person fellowship with $6,000 USD monthly travel-and-housing allowance.

What do you make of this?
The board is still in beta, so this is exactly the moment to say what you think. A vacancy we have missed, a judgement you do not share, something that does not work — all of it helps.
