This role is on our board because we think it is an unusually effective way to spend a career. How we reason about it

This board is still in beta. The reason below is our judgement — tell us if you think we have it wrong. Give feedback

Why this is on the board

Countries such as Brazil, Canada and the EU member states are working on their own AI strategies, and most tacitly assume these must centre on ever larger, more autonomous systems. In this role you build the counter-argument and turn it into concrete proposals. If one government adopts it, what an entire country funds and permits shifts, though you are going against a strong consensus and success is far from certain.

About the role

The Future of Life Institute (FLI) is hiring an AI Industry Associate/Lead to develop a vision for a pro-human path for AI development, framed around controllable, verifiable, human-centred AI tools, as opposed to the development and adoption of maximally autonomous general AI systems. The AI Industry Associate/Lead will engage with policymakers on how AI innovation and safety regulation can go hand in hand.

What do you make of this?

The board is still in beta, so this is exactly the moment to say what you think. A vacancy we have missed, a judgement you do not share, something that does not work — all of it helps.
