This work does not itself solve an urgent problem: you write fast trading software for a trading firm. The leverage lies in the salary, which here is high early in your career. Anyone who gives away a large share of it every year to carefully researched charities can use it to pay people who do work on such a problem. That is called earning to give, and it only works if you actually do it.
