Groups

There are effective altruism groups all over the Netherlands. Their purpose is to help their members maximise their social impact.

University groups

These groups are centred around specific universities. Common activities include:

  • Running educational programmes
  • Running meetups such as socials, discussion groups, or speaker events
  • Organising group trips to conferences
  • Helping people embark on high impact careers with effective charities

You can find out more about our currently existing groups below. If you’re interested in working with us to launch a new group, please get in touch!

Cause-specific groups

These are communities of people interested in a specific cause area commonly associated with effective altruism. We’re particularly excited about launching groups that relate to the following cause areas:

  • Global priorities research
  • Global health and development
  • Animal welfare
  • Positively shaping the development of artificial intelligence
  • Reducing global catastrophic biological risks
  • Nuclear security
  • Improving institutional decision making
  • Climate change (extreme risks)

Professional groups

These are communities of people interested in effective altruism who work in the same profession. Examples outside of the Netherlands include the EA Consulting Network, EA Finance group, and the UK Civil Service and Policy network.

We have a policy/politics group and an effective giving group but we’re also excited about launching groups that relate to other careers, e.g.:

  • Organisation-building at effective nonprofits
  • Research in relevant areas
  • Communication

City groups

City groups hold events in cities or other geographical areas where members live close enough to attend regular in-person meetings. Common activities include:

  • Running meetups such as socials, discussion groups, speaker events
  • Having one-on-one chats with group members
  • Fostering connections between members

Less active city groups meet monthly on average and aim to be a place where people who are already interested in effective altruism can connect with each other. More active city groups run weekly or fortnightly events including guest speakers, book clubs, outreach events, subgroups based on relevant interest areas, fellowships, effective altruism projects, retreats, career guidance and more.
