Why this is on the board
Whoever sets up the statutory animal disease monitoring helps determine how early the Netherlands detects an outbreak of, say, African swine fever. That in turn decides whether a few farms are culled or whole regions with millions of pigs. You don't decide alone and you work under political pressure, but the contingency plans and monitoring programmes you write apply to the entire Dutch pig farming sector, one of the largest in Europe.
