Why this is on the board

This directorate writes the frameworks within which hundreds of government organisations choose which cloud, which standards and which AI applications they use. Once introduced, such choices are often locked in for years and determine how dependent the state becomes on a handful of suppliers. There is no separate minister for digital affairs, so a small team advises ministers directly, and the director's judgement therefore probably carries more weight than at most ministries.
