Find a career that does a lot of good

You'll spend around 80,000 hours of your life working. That's probably your biggest chance to help others. Here's how to start if you live in the Netherlands.

Our advice in brief

What we'd tell a friend

The short version. Each point links to a longer read.

Pick a pressing problem

Look for problems that are big, neglected and solvable, not just the ones you happen to stumble into.

Consider every way to help

Research, policy, communication, building organisations, earning to give: there are many ways to help. List them all before you narrow down.

Test your fit cheaply

Make a best guess, find what you're least sure of and test your fit in small ways. Revisit your plan every year or two.

Talk to people

Many career switches start with a conversation. Meet people already doing the work, or book a call with us to start.

New to effective altruism? Start with our free course: about 100 minutes in six short units, at your own pace, with no sign-up.

Your next step

Where are you now?

Pick the one that sounds most like you. Each starts with what we offer here.

"The huge network I've gotten in contact with through EA has been amazing. I've made this pivot much, much faster than I think I could have accomplished in other comparable fields."
